TRB’s National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 457: Implementation of the AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide and Software documents the experience of transportation agencies in the implementation of the 2008 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide: A Manual of Practice (MEPDG) and the 2011 software program, AASHTOWare Pavement ME DesignTM (formerly DARWin-ME). The MEPDG and accompanying software are based on mechanistic-empirical (ME) principles and are a significant departure from the previous empirically based AASHTO pavement design procedures. AASHTO Up Close is a video series dedicated to enlightening viewers about the people, purpose and priorities of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. In this video we feature AASHTOWare, a cooperative computer software development program within the Engineering and Technical Services Division of AASHTO. AASHTOWare is produced at significant cost savings because it is cooperatively developed and continually updated by volunteer experts from state transportation departments across the country. These experts determine software requirements and design, and oversee the work of contract software developers to create software that solves complex problems that are common to all transportation agencies.
Transportation professionals are utilizing AASHTOWare products in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, six Canadian provinces and in hundreds of U.S. Consulting firms. To learn more about AASHTOWare and its list of transportation project management software visit.
